Anne came to Canada in 1924 on a ship called the Montrose landing in Halifax then came to Lethbridge on a train. She died in 1968 of a heart attack and was buried in Lethbridge.
My Grandma Marie Hatley Still said that her mother was a jolly, pleasantly plump (i like that) woman and a good cook. she used to cook for big groups during harvest time. She had brown hair, blue eyes, and was 5'3". Grandma also said that she used to be a housekeeper and would also take care of people. I wonder where i got that from :).
I wrote a poem about her. I read this poem to my mom and she started to cry.
Anne Merrigan
(Great Grandma Hatley)
In a sea filled with crystal pearls
Carefully I tread as not to break
The precious memories each held
From loved ones gathered I comfort take
Amidst the glowing sparkle I search
For a face most beloved and dear
The man I married so long ago
Robert, I am sure to meet here
A crystal catches my blue eyes
A vision clear, a vision told
Takes me to a cathedral, red
Of spires, domes and statues old
Of men, of woman happily gilded
Of a cold winter’s day to find
A bride, a gown soft and white
Of warmth growing within the bride
Another crystal brightly shows
A family sheltered in a country new
A lifetime of joys and tears did shed
A lifetime of love and sorrows due
Tearing my gaze from the scene
I catch my husband’s gentle light
Eagerly to his arms I make my way
So cruelly taken one fateful night
I look around at the crystal tears
The crystal tears shed for me
No longer can I be with them
Their journey without me I must be
In a daughter’s ear I whisper
An eternal love to always feel
Given in turn to her family young
Which hearts will kindly heal.
A strong hand takes mine lovingly
Leading me to Heaven’s golden doors
To start anew with him again
The life I started, the life adored
