Ode to Language

I started laughing when I found this little gem.  I had a lot of fun writing it.  It was an assignment when I took the writing class at the college. Here is the outline we had to use for our poem.

Figurative Language

1. (apostrophe)-address something nonhuman
2. (personification)-personify something
3. (synesthesia)-use an image missing sensory perception
4. (hyperbole)-exaggerate
5. (underestimate/litotes) use understatement/deny the opposite
6. (metonymy/synecdoche)-refer to something by using something related/use a part of a whole
7. (paradox/oxymoron) write a compressed contradiction
8. (allusion)-allude to something
9. (metaphor) use a metaphor
10. (simile)-extend the metaphor, using simile
11. (implied metaphor /analogy)-extend the metaphor further, using implied metaphor, or anology

Enjoy!!

Language

Language, how I treasure and love thee
Wrap thy words around me in a sweet embrace
Thy warm fragrant tones fill mine ears
Heaven’s music pales in comparison
I cannot speak without thee, a fluid motion not a babbling brook
The theatre gathers men and woman,
Delivering thy script to the crowds
My mind filled with words I cannot see, it’s deafening silence.
An atomic explosion in mine head
Thy oxymorons, thy metonymies were endless winds
Thy similes, Thy paradoxes like whispers in a breeze
Thy analogies, Thy litotes forests of imagination
